PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1
Timothy R. Carter, MD, Charlottesville, Va
A 67-year-old white woman originally presented 2 years ago with nasal stuffiness, intermittent epistaxis, and a large, intranasal, bluish, friable mass. This mass involved the right nasal cavity and right maxillary, frontal, and sphenoid sinuses. After biopsy diagnosis, she received 6,000 rad of radiation therapy. She developed a recurrence in the region of the right middle turbinate and ethmoid sinus 1 years later. Following an external ethmoidectomy, a histological diagnosis was made. One month before the present time, she had a second recurrence in the area of the right middle turbinate. At operation this tumor involved the right periorbital tissues and lateral nasal tissues and extended superiorly to the level of the cribriform. This lesion is illustrated in Figs 1 through 3.
