PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1

A 17-year-old girl had a five-day history of pain during swallowing associated with a sensation of fullness in the back of her mouth. There was no history of trauma.

On physical examination, the patient was noted to have a 1-cm spherical mass on the left central soft palate. The well-circumscribed hard tumor was covered by an intact mucosa. It was only slightly tender to palpation. The remainder of the physical examination revealed mild pharyngeal and nasal erythema and normal tonsillar tissue.

The mass was completely excised. Figures 1 and 2 are representative microscopic sections.
