To the Editor.—I address this comment to your editorial in the October 1985 ARCHIVES.¹ In the US Capitol Building, the congressmen and senators walk past the pillars that hold up the Capitol dome several times a day. These 13 pillars are decorated with carved tobacco leaves.

Now do you have some insight why tobacco is a pillar of our laws and economy?
