The Facial Nerve Disorders Committee sponsored a panel presentation on the management of acute acquired facial paralysis at the meeting. Donald Kamerer, MD, University of Pittsburgh, moderated the panel. The panelists were Drs Mark May, Gale Gardner, Gary Jackson, B. Hill Britton, and Derald Brackmann. The moderator presented interesting cases of facial paralysis for discussion by the panel.

The management of facial paralysis associated with acute otitis media in childhood was discussed, and the consensus of the panelists was that the primary treatment for this disease is systemic antibiotic therapy and wide myringotomy to promote drainage. Surgery is limited to those patients in whom the clinical course and roentgenograms suggest coalescent mastoiditis. In this situation, complete simple mastoidectomy for drainage is indicated. There is a very limited role for facial nerve decompression in this disease, and the prognosis for recovery is excellent.
