Eyelid Tattooing

Recently, there has been a major national promotion by mail and commercial exhibits (to physicians) and through other media (to the public) of a technique for permanent tattooing of the eyelids. This "procedure" has been advocated as a form of cosmetic surgery that will eliminate the drudgery of repeated application of eyeliner. In addition to the technique, there is also a new professional society, The International Society of Blepharopigmentation and Dermapigmentation. Our office has recently received correspondence from a public relations firm that is promoting the technique and the society, and the "press release" refers to Giora G. Andres, MD, a Las Vegas physician who is described as the "inventor of the procedure."
The October 1985 issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology contains a report from the University of Iowa that describes a possible mechanism for the permanent eyelash loss that has been observed after the tattooing of the eyelid.
