The Committee on Laser Safety of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery presented "What Is New in Laser Surgery" during the scientific session of the Academy's recent annual meeting. The new set of standards for "Laser Safety in the Health Care Environment," written by the American National Standards Institute Subcommittee (ANSI Z 136.3), was previewed by Robert H. Ossoff, MD, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago. In his presentation, Dr Ossoff described in detail how best to implement this important laser safety standard in the medical environment (hospitals, clinics, and offices). Credential requirements that call for attendance at a "hands-on" training course by physicians not trained in laser surgery during residency were reviewed, and safety protocols for use of the argon, carbon dioxide, and neodymium-YAG (Nd: YAG) lasers in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery were outlined in detail.
