The volume entitled Nose and Throat, which is the fourth edition of Operative Surgery, is a splendid improvement over the prior versions of this series. It is edited by John C. Ballantyne and Donald F. N. Harrison of London, and their updating of this rather comprehensive work has been a successful effort overall.
They have assembled the concepts of 37 author-surgeons of distinction from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. They provide a "how-I-do-it" approach to the performance of 65 separate surgical operations and procedures in the head and neck region. The authors, in a cumulative sense, reflect centuries of surgical experience, and their verbal and visual exposition of their preferred approaches to these various problems are most valuable.
By comparison, the criticisms of this volume are much less significant, but they should be mentioned. There is less content dealing with facial plastic and reconstructive techniques than most
