Proceedings of conferences and symposia have long been used as a rapid way to publish state-of-the-art information in a timely fashion, but in some cases the quality is spotty. The quality of the written material is no better than the content of the symposium, which is determined by the invited speakers. In many cases, such proceedings have been disappointing, and although they serve a function, they are not always of the same quality as a textbook that is carefully conceived, executed, and edited by one or more individuals with invited authors who spend time preparing an in-depth manuscript. Other failings of proceedings are that the talks are frequently short and the material presented is not peer reviewed. Some editing occurs following the presentation prior to publication, but, frequently, a verbatim transcript or an abbreviated version of the speech is sent, and presentations and manuscripts are not the same.
