PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1
Robin P. Youngs, FRCS, David M. Green, MB, BS, London
A 36-year-old black woman in the third trimester of pregnancy had a two-year history of dysphagia with the sensation of a pharyngeal mass. Her symptoms had worsened considerably during her pregnancy. Following delivery of a normal infant, the patient underwent direct pharyngoscopy, which showed a large, sessile, soft-tissue mass arising from the posterior pharyngeal wall at the level of the glottic inlet and extending into the left side of the neck.
Once the pathologic diagnosis was known, the patient underwent complete surgical excision of the mass by means of combined endoscopy and lateral pharyngotomy. The surgical specimen is shown in Fig 1. Figures 2 and 3 are low- and high-power photomicrographs, respectively.
