The following issues and developments emerged from the annual meeting of the American Board of Otolaryngology (ABO) held in March 1986 and the executive committee meeting in June 1986.
1. Election.—At the March 1986 business meeting, the board of directors of the ABO elected Dr Roger Boles, San Francisco, as president; Dr Patrick J. Doyle, Vancouver, British Columbia, as vice-president; and Dr Bobby R. Alford, Houston, as executive vice-president/secretary-treasurer. Two new directors were elected to the board: Dr Warren Y. Adkins, Charleston, SC, and Dr Gerald B. Healy, Boston. Drs William H. Saunders and George F. Reed were elevated to senior counselor status
2. Examination Results.—There were 358 candidates that participated in the September 1985 written examination. Of these candidates, 152 (42%) passed on the basis of the written examination and were certified; 139 (39%) became candidates for the oral examination; and 67 (19%) failed. The oral examination
