A panel of experts reviewed the current state of the art regarding implants in facial plastic surgery. The panel consisted of Jan Beekhuis, MD, William Panje, MD, Charles Cummings, MD, John Frederickson, MD, and the Academy's honored guest speaker, plastic surgeon Leonard Rubin, MD. The first part of the panel's review covered implants in aesthetic facial surgery, including nasal, chin, and malar implants. Dr Beekhuis discussed his long experience with a polyamide (Supramid Mesh), particularly in the nasal and chin regions, and reiterated his generally favorable results. He feels that autogenous tissue, such as septal or conchal cartilage, is preferred, but that, when necessary, alloplastic implants provide satisfactory bulk with minimal resorption. Most of his prior implants have been made using a polyamide (Supramid), while he is currently using and evaluating another rolled mesh implant made of a synthetic polyester fiber suture (Mersilene).
