This second edition of Naumann's text on head and neck surgery is a comprehensive review and surgical atlas of procedures involving the structures of the neck. It consists of 11 well-formated, profusely illustrated chapters with primary emphasis on operative techniques. Each chapter also contains brief sections on diagnosis, surgical indications, useful hints, and postoperative care. Important surgical concepts are highlighted in most chapters and complement the easily read, concise operative descriptions. Chapter detail is somewhat uneven, with only some sections providing extensive descriptions of operative patient positioning, draping, and surgical instrumentation.

A major shortcoming of the text is the lack in some chapters of adequate updating of current surgical concepts and techniques. In particular, reconstructive techniques utilizing myocutaneous flaps, composite flaps, and free flaps are only briefly mentioned.
