This is a book of nine chapters by 14 contributors that presents a multidisciplinary view of the diagnosis and management of oral cancers. The authors are primarily European, except for the authors of the chapter on chemotherapy and an introduction to the surgery chapter by Dr John Conley.

The first four chapters deal with the clinicopathologic characteristics of oral malignancies, all of which are written by oral pathologists known for their expertise in this area. The first chapter on premalignant lesions brings order to this complex area of discussion. These four chapters are quite exhaustive in their review of their topics and very well referenced. My only major distress occurs on page 27 when the author refers to invasive carcinoma in situ. This left me confused, as the terms invasive and carcinoma in situ are not compatible ones. Carcinoma in situ requires, by definition, the absence of invasion.
