PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1

A 75-year-old nonsmoking woman was seen because of a five-month history of hoarseness. On examination, a cystic lesion of the left false cord was found. This mass completely obscured the vocal cords, but did not significantly obstruct the upper airway. This mass was examined endoscopically and on removal was noted to be a cystic lesion filled with clear mucoid fluid. It had a broad base involving the posterior one half of the left false cord and was completely excised. Six months following excision, the patient was free of any residual tumor. The pathologic characteristics of the lesion are shown in Figs 1 and 2.
