To the Editor.—Professor Michel Portmann planned and presided over the fifth international symposium, on the facial nerve, held in Bordeaux, France (Sept 3-6, 1984). His meeting was outstanding. All aspects of facial nerve diseases were discussed and the social program can only be described as exceptional. To the great surprise of many otolaryngologists, the symposium was honored by the participation of the distinguished nonagenarian, Professor George Portmann, who spoke with vigor, clarity, and humor that belied his age.

The physicians interested in recent investigations into the causes of Bell's palsy found the papers to be worthwhile. The proponents of the popular viral hypothesis in which the herpes simplex acts as the sole agent causing Bell's palsy again failed to present solid evidence to substantiate this concept.
