Neuroscience Awards in Honor of Sen Jacob Javits.—The National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke has chosen 39 grant applications to receive special recognition as recipients of the newly created Sen Jacob Javits Neuroscience Awards.

The awards provide research grant support for up to seven years to investigators in the basic and clinical neurosciences and communicative sciences. Awardees were recommended by the National Advisory Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke Council for the strategic scientific importance of their work and the scientific merit of their research proposals.

The awards honor former Senator Javits, who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the degenerative neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Since his illness began several years ago, Senator Javits has championed research support for a wide range of disorders of the brain and CNS.
