The middle and inner ears are good subjects for study by scanning electron microscopy. This atlas covers the surface anatomy of these areas in a comprehensive fashion. Additionally, several pathologic states are also depicted. More than 250 high-quality photomicrographs and 20 diagrams are effectively used in this major undertaking. Text summarizing anatomic and physiologic features accompanies the photographs.
The book is divided into four major sections—"The Middle Ear," "The Inner Ear and Vestibular Organs," "The Cochlea," and "Morphological Changes of the Middle and Inner Ear." Each section is divided into seven to 27 subsections. Typical subsection titles are "The Tympanic Membrane," "The Semicircular Canals," "The Stria Vascularis," and "Cholesteatoma." Each subsection consists of one-half to one page of text, three to 20 photomicrographs, and a list of references.
The table of contents is complete enough to guide the reader to the area of concern. The index is adequate.
