The most common cause of the life-threatening problem of tracheal stenosis are those resuscitative efforts to relieve people of other life-threatening problems. There are only two other books on reconstruction of the trachea, neither of which is in English. Therefore, this is a valuable book that provides historical perspective but draws primarily on the wide personal experience of the coauthors. The sections on embryology, anatomy, pathophysiology, and the causes and prevention of stenosis are crisp and complete. The authors are quick to point out the limitations of conservative therapy by means of medical management and dilatation.

The authors report their own experience with 220 tracheal resections with end-to-end anastomosis at their clinic in Lausanne, Switzerland, and state that this is the method of choice for repair of tracheal stenosis from trauma or tumor.
