Vestibular Neurotology, edited by P. Molina-Negro and R. A. Bertrand, published in the Advances in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology series, is a compendium of papers presented at the Symposium of Clinical Neurotology, September 1980, conducted at the first centennial of the Notre Dame Hospital in Montreal.
Written by various otologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons, these 18 articles focus on the foundations and new horizons in vestibular anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.
These articles cover a spectrum of vestibular topics; yet, they represent a rather restricted field within otoneurology. The histology and central connections of the labyrinth, the clinicalanatomic mechanisms for posture control, and the basic vestibular physiology are nicely reviewed by Drs Gacek, Molina-Negro, and Oosterwald. Specific disease entities, eg, cupulolithiasis (Gacek), endolymphatic hydrops (McClure, Bertrand, Arnold, and Bretlau et al), and cochlear otosclerosis (Bretlau et al) are reviewed with particular emphasis on medical v surgical therapy.
