MILK OF MAGNESIA AND OLIVE OIL AS A TOPICAL APPLICATION TO MUCOUS MEMBRANES

Equal parts of milk of magnesia and olive oil have been used by dermatologists for some time for skin irritations, but I have not known of the use of such a solution for acute inflammations of the nasal mucosa. For some months, I have been using this combination with satisfaction to my patients and to myself. There may be added to this base any of the essential oils, singly or in combination as desired. My favorite combinations are 15 or 20 drops of oil of white pine or of eucalyptol to the ounce of the mixture. This solution appears to be quite stable, but requires occasional shaking. It is especially useful when discharges are excoriating. In subacute inflammations of the nasal mucosa, I have used equal parts of compound fluid extract of benzoin, milk of magnesia and olive oil.
