PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1

John R. Kuhn, MD, Oklahoma City

A 20-year-old man was initially seen with a one-year history of recurrent swelling on the right side of his neck. The swelling had not changed in size for five months prior to manifestation.

Physical examination disclosed an 8 x 4-cm cystic mass extending medial and along the contour of the sterno

cleidomastoid muscle. The superior aspect of the mass was just below the mastoid process and the inferior border was 5 cm above the clavicle. The mass was slightly tender to palpation and had no pulsatile movement; no bruit was heard over the mass. The rest of the physical examination findings were normal.

The patient was taken to surgery for an incisional biopsy. At surgery, a blue, multiloculated, cystic mass was identified medial to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. It was encapsulated and not adherent to adjacent tissues. A frozen section was . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
