This book is the result of an international conference on aminoglycoside ototoxicity conducted at the University of Chicago in September 1979 and sponsored by the Schering Corporation. It is indeed a book that should prove useful to the basic and/or clinical scientist engaged in aminoglycoside ototoxicity research or in libraries as a reference book. Approximately 60% of the book is devoted to animal studies and 40% to human studies. After a superb historical perspective by Joseph Hawkins, the following topics are discussed by several of the leading investigators in the world: cochlear and function, biochemistry of aminoglycoside effects on the cochlear, vestibular function, and animal histopathology. Inner ear function (both cochlear and vestibular) is then discussed in humans together with some clinical studies with ototoxicity.
