To the Editor.—In the August ARCHIVES article entitled "Interim Assessment of Candidates for Cochlear Implants" (1982;108:478-483), Owens et al suggest that the Minimal

Auditory Capabilities (MAC) battery might be used for comparison of patient performance with a hearing aid with anticipated performance after a cochlear implant. That is, the aided test results could be used to decide whether the patient should opt for a cochlear implant. We agree in principle with such a technique and have in fact been using a similar procedure (with different tests) for patient selection for many years. However, these authors failed to take into consideration what we believe may be a critical variable.

The authors state that the test was presented at most comfortable level (MCL), but do not tell the reader what that level was for those patients with profound hearing losses. Our own data, based on the testing of several hundred profoundly . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
