This is a concise, well-illustrated and easy-to-read monograph for adult tracheostomy patients and their families that has long been needed. The publication is divided into several short sections guiding the reader through care of a tracheostomy, step by step. It begins by defining tracheostomy and provides a description of the pertinent anatomy in layman's terms with the medical terms in parentheses. The changes that the patient might expect after a tracheostomy procedure are then discussed, and the equipment needed is listed and pictured. Cleaning the tube, securing it with cloth twill tapes, and care of the skin around the stoma are covered adequately. There is also a glossary of medical terms for reference.
The manual does not discuss postoperative complications or warning signs that the patient should know, eg, bleeding from the tracheostomy tube. Furthermore, there are several pictures of cuffed tracheostomy tubes, but no explanation of a balloon cuff
