French Keller Hansel and the History of Allergy

The death of French Keller Hansel, MD, at the age of 88 years, on Aug 29, 1981, brought to an end the career of a great man and an exciting era in our specialty of otolaryngology.

A brilliant scientist and an enterprising innovator, Hansel was born in 1893, in Fidelity, Ill. He graduated from the St Louis School of Medicine and served as an intern and medical resident at the Missouri Baptist Hospital, St Louis. In 1921, he went to the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, first in the field of surgical pathology and then as a Fellow in otolaryngology under H. I. Lillie, MD. His examination of pathologic sections from surgical specimens called to the attention of his inquiring mind the unusual eosinophilic infiltration of the subepithelial tissues of numerous specimens of nasal and sinus mucosa removed at surgery on the nose and nasal accessory sinuses.
