A 24-year-old woman was initially seen with a cervical mass that was first noted two months previously. She denied having pain, dysphagia, hoarseness, or a recent upper respiratory tract infection.
Physical examination confirmed the presence of a midline neck mass adjacent to the hyoid bone that moved with deglutition but not with tongue protrusion (Fig 1).
A thyroid scan obtained before surgery was normal. The diagnosis of a thyroglossal duct cyst was considered, and the patient underwent resection with a cuff of normal tissue and hyoid bone. A low-power photomicrograph is shown (Fig 2). Figure 3 corresponds to the enclosed area in Fig 2.
