To the Editor.—We read with interest the article entitled "Bacterial Tracheitis" by Liston et al, which was published in the September 1981 ARCHIVES (107:561-564).
Liston et al do not seem to have been aware of our article entitled "Membranous Laryngotracheobronchitis (Membranous Croup)" that was published in the American Journal of Roentgenology (1979;133:53-58). In this article, we pointed out that in what we called membranous croup (which we think is identical to what Liston et al call bacterial tracheitis), there is a roentgenologic finding that distinguished the entity from ordinary croup. Membranous croup is the demonstration of membrane, usually partially attached, on roentgenograms of the neck, in addition to the usual roentgenographic findings in croup.
Since we published that article, we have continued to gain experience with the clinical and roentgenographic findings of membranous croup. While we have not had any fatalities, we fully agree that it is a dangerous
