To the members of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, I wish to express my deepest appreciation for the honor and privilege of being your president this year. To you and to the members of the Society for Head and Neck Surgeons and to all others, I am pleased to have this opportunity of sharing a few thoughts with you.

THE SURGICAL SPECIALTY

Just what is a head and neck surgeon? He is no more than a surgeon with a special interest in a particular region of the body. Head and neck surgery is now a specific surgical specialty embracing those diseases of the head and neck that are amenable to surgical treatment but that exclude the contents of the orbit and cranial cavity.
