Chiron the Centaur was the father of medicine who taught Aesculapius his art (Fig 1 and 2). The past presidents of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery have developed the art and science of head and neck surgery and taught it to their colleagues. Individually, their contributions have been enormous, and collectively, they have been legion.

John Joseph Conley, MD, our first president, is clinical professor of otolaryngology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York; attending otolaryngologist at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center; and chief of the Head and Neck Service at St Vincent's Hospital, New York.
