The authors have successfully brought together in one volume a number of classic articles that deal with the development of otology in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book extends from the contributions of the great French otologist, Itard in the early 1820s, to Marcus Diamant's thesis on pneumatization in the mastoid in 1940. The book is not intended to be a comprehensive history of otology, rather it reproduces important monographs that were published by the notables in the history of otology.
The authors have divided the book into sections that trace the evolution of otology as a specialty. The first section deals with the scientific foundation of otology and reproduces such classic monographs as Toynbee's "The Establishing of the Pathological Anatomical Bases of Otology," published in 1860.
