Robert L. Keith and associates at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, have produced a soft-cover booklet to help explain to a patient that he has cancer of the larynx and the "whys and wherefores" of what is in store for him. The booklet is a compilation of inputs from patients, therapists, dieticians, and physicians, and it answers many of the questions patients have, especially some of the aspects of cancer of the larynx and laryngectomy that we, as otolaryngologists, because of exposure, take for granted or do not think of as important. It is simply written without being condescending, and line drawings blend with and amplify the text in a pleasing manner. Anatomy, diagnosis, surgery, esophageal speech, and even tube feedings and stomal hygiene are covered.
