This book presents in as concise a manner as possible the development of the distinctive features theory in speech production and perception. Dr Singh, whose productivity has been enormous in this area, reviews the development of this theory from its normal initiation in 1955 with the classic work of Jakobson, Fant, and Halle to acquired material that is still in press.
The readership for which this book is designed is the student or the scholar entering the field who needs the complete annotated references from the scientific literature as the theory has been developed, expanded, and applied. The research techniques utilized to obtain the basic data from which the theory develops range from simple spectrographic analysis to some of the more sophisticated computer techniques for arranging distinctive sound features in five-dimensional space.
