This is a concise, well-written monograph that fulfills the authors' stated aim of
... bringing together related material... dispersed among several major textbooks of anesthesiology and otolaryngology... (into)... a single reference which may be consulted by those involved in airway care.
While no really original material is presented, it provides a quick reference to techniques of orotracheal and nasotracheal intubation as well as to cricothyreotomy and tracheotomy. Methods of local and general anesthesia for these procedures are covered. The special situation of intubation in the neonatal and pediatric age groups is considered from the standpoint of anatomy, anesthesia, and instrumentation.
There are several good illustrations and some instructive xeroradiographs demonstrating why the "sniffing" position is the best for visualization of the glottis and upper airway endoscopically.
The chapter on complications of tracheal intubation is quite thorough.
