Unquestionably a new text on temporal bone histopathology is needed and Linthicum and Schwartzman have responded with this small, easy to read atlas.
The first part of the atlas covers microscopic anatomy of the temporal bone. All histologic sections but one are horizontal with line drawing schematics that illustrate the level and plane of the section. Structures seen in photomicrographs are labeled and discussed on the page opposite each illustration.
The second half included diseases and disorders of the temporal bone encompassing: congenital malformations, physiologic changes, inflammatory processes, dyscrasias, fractures and trauma, sensorineural hearing loss and tumors. Discussions in general are superficial requiring an interested reader to search elsewhere for details. Perhaps this is not a fair criticism of an atlas in which text is largely descriptive, yet one is somehow left with a sense of incompleteness after reading this book.
