To the Editor.–In the article "Otosclerosis and Vestibular Degeneration (ARCHIVES 97:484-487, 1973) Gussen describes one case of otosclerosis in a patient with hemochromatosis. She recalls the possibility of chondrocalcinosis in hemochromatosis and speculates on "the possible role of calcific degenerative change of the oval window with resultant otosclerotic repair." In an article by Bourguet et al (Rev Otoneuroophthalmol 42:215-224, 1970) we first reported hearing loss as a complication of idiopathic hemochromatosis. Audiometric studies showed that hearing loss exceeding 30 dB in every frequency occurred in 14 of 43 patients with hemochromatosis (32% of the patients), whereas in a control group, strictly paired for sex and age, only three patients (7%) were found to have such a result, the difference being statistically significant. In nine cases perceptive deafness was found, in two cases mixed deafness, and in three cases conductive deafness; in this third group, otosclerosis was proven after death
