The first edition of Improving the Child's Speech appeared in 1953 and was directed toward nonprofessionals with little or no background in the field of speech pathology and audiology. The second edition contains more definitive material for both an adequate introduction to fundamental principles of the theoretical phase of the field as well as general procedures and specific techniques to enable both the nonprofessional and the professional worker to "deal effectively with such speech problems as it is wise or feasible for them to handle."

The text contains 12 chapters that are devoted to the various areas of general speech problems related to the growth and development of children. Speech improvement as an educational problem is discussed and emphasis is directed toward the whole child, recognizing individual differences and the necessity of special needs.
