ABSCESS OF TEMPORAL LOBE FOLLOWING ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA. By DR. O. MAYER.

Dr. Mayer presented a case in which abscess of the temporal lobe developed after acute otitis media. In spite of the fact that encephalomalacia rubra developed following the opening of the abscess, the patient recovered after continuous tamponade with iodoform gauze.

DISCUSSION

DR. LEIDLER: In two cases I used continuous tamponade. One of the patients recovered; the other one died.

DR. H. NEUMANN: The method of Albrecht, Feuchtinger and Leidler requires not only tamponade for the cavity of the abscess, but also removal of the inflamed cerebral substance. This procedure is then followed by tamponade. The method is valuable for abscesses of the convexity; however, for abscesses on the base of the brain the procedure of Lemaitre seems preferable.
