Diagnosis: Metastatic mesothelioma involving the tongue

Mesotheliomas are aggressive tumors that arise from the mesothelial surfaces of the pleural and peritoneal cavities, the tunica vaginalis, or the pericardium, with the pleural cavity being the most common site of origin.¹ The incidence of these tumors is estimated to be approximately 2200 to 3000 per year in the United States, usually affecting men between the ages of 50 and 70 years. The pathogenesis of mesothelioma has been most closely linked to asbestos exposure; however, there has been recent interest in the role of the SV40 virus and its ability to induce transformation in mesothelial cells.²

Asbestos exposure is associated with a 30- to 45-year latency period between first exposure and subsequent development of tumor.
