Diagnosis: A large unicystic ameloblastoma of mandible
Ameloblastoma is an uncommon neoplasm. It accounts for approximately 20% of all odontogenic tumors and represents only 1% of all tumors in the jaws. The mandible is the site of origin in 80% of cases.1 Males and females are affected equally, usually in the third or fourth decade of life.2 The tumor is thought to arise from residual epithelium of the tooth-forming apparatus, such as the epithelial cell rests of Malassez; epithelium of odontogenic cysts; basal cells of the surface epithelium; epithelium of the enamel organ; and heterotopic epithelium of extraoral sites, such as the pituitary gland.3
Ameloblastomas can be divided into the following 3 groups, according to variable clinicopathologic situations: solid or multicystic, unicystic, and peripheral (extraosseous).4 The treatment of ameloblastomas can be conservative or radical.
