Diagnosis: Laryngeal plasmacytoma in a patient with known multiple myeloma (MM)

The patient’s medical history included long-standing rheumatoid arthritis and MM, which initially presented as a sternal swelling (Figure 3). The patient was initially seen for the symptoms of hoarseness and dysphagia in 1983. At that time, his ear, nose, and throat examination did not reveal any abnormalities. His symptoms persisted, and in 1985, another ear, nose, and throat examination showed only slight hypertrophy of the right plica vocalis, which did not require treatment. In 2001, he again presented with the same persistent symptoms. Again, the results of his ear, nose, and throat examination were normal, and a barium examination of the esophagus showed no abnormalities.
