OTOLARYNGOLOGY BECAME a specialty by viewing its quest through reflected light. Reflected light from mucosal surfaces formed our images of the head and neck. Reflections from our head mirrors lighted our world. Reflections in laryngeal mirrors allowed us to see what others couldn't. This editorial announces the initiation of "Reflections," a new addition to the ARCHIVES. As our days become filled with more regulations and frustrations, as bureaucractic distance increasingly separates us from our patients, "Reflections" is intended to allow a moment to dwell on the more humane side of our specialty. We hope that it will encourage our readers to put to pen those experiences that make our practices fulfilling, desperate, amusing, sad, mysterious, and spiritual. It will be a forum to relate those tender experiences that rest on no scientific or statistical basis, that come with no figures or tables, but that we treasure more than our factual . . .
