A physician in our area has asked me about the dose of carboplatin specified in "Concomitant Chemoradiotherapy in Pyriform Sinus Carcinoma" by Prades et al.¹ For patients treated under protocol 1, the dose is listed as "carboplatin with an area under the curve (AUC) of 5 mg/mL per 1 minute per day on days 1 through 5 and on days 28 through 33. The AUC dose was calculated using the Calvert formula."^1(p385) This is equal to an AUC of 25 per week, a dose of carboplatin appropriate for bone marrow transplantation. I would have expected each patient to need stem cell support. Is this dose correct?
