In their article, "Management of Auricular Hematoma Using a Thermoplastic
Splint," Henderson et al1 document an impressive
result in a man with a severely injured ear and a potentially complicating
medical condition. Their technique uses a lightweight splint that conforms
to the convolutions of the auricle, with no additional pressure dressing.
A similar method has been used at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa
Clara, Calif, but with padded splints. Henderson and colleagues' case suggests,
however, that padding is unnecessary, thereby allowing the splint to be worn
in the shower, and perhaps even with wrestling headgear. It seems likely that
this straightforward approach will become the preferred treatment for an often
difficult problem.
