Facial Nerve Functions at Hospital Discharge After Acoustic Neuroma Surgery

We enjoyed the article by Arriaga and Chen in the May issue of the ARCHIVES.1 As we are currently working on a similar retrospective study for comparison of facial nerve outcomes between the retrosigmoid approach and the translabyrinthine approach in patients with medium-size tumors, we wanted to reanalyze their data. Our analysis using the authors' data provided in the article revealed a significant difference (P<.05) in facial nerve functions at "discharge from the hospital." This is contrary to what the authors stated in their article. The bottom half of Table 1 presents our analysis of facial nerve function at discharge according to Table 2 of the article.
