A 29-YEAR-OLD white woman was referred from a local dental clinic with an 8-week history of a slowly enlarging, painless lesion on the right side of her hard palate (Figure 1). She denied having had previous lesions, pain of any kind, trauma, significant dental problems, dysphagia, bleeding from the lesion, weight loss, fevers, or malaise. Her medical and surgical histories were unremarkable. She had no history of tobacco use, but she reported occasional alcohol use.
Her only significant finding on physical examination was a 1.8 x 1.8-cm ulcerated lesion on the right side of her palate. The central portion of the lesion was firm and was raised above the contour of the intact palate. The edges had a rolled appearance, and the lesion had an erythematous border.
