Millennial Milestones That Matter

AS WE ENTER THE 21ST CENTURY and the beginning of the third millennium, it is hard not to find a special significance in the numerical artifacts by which we organize our collective history and memory. There seems to be something in the numbers themselves that causes us to take stock and to reflect on the past and the lessons we can learn from it. There is also an equal propensity to look forward and begin to enumerate wishes and goals. I, for one, am not so much excited by the idea of celebrating the exact second that we (arguably arbitrarily) choose to mark the passage between millennia as I am moved by the power of these numerical markers to spark both the individual and the popular imagination.
