A 43-YEAR-OLD woman presented with a 2-year history of slowly progressive swelling of the right side of her soft palate that was associated with pain in her right ear. She had been diagnosed as having temperomandibular joint dysfunction, but a dental examination revealed palatal swelling. She was referred to an otolaryngologist for further evaluation.

Examination of the oropharynx revealed a 3x3-cm firm, nontender submucosal mass in the right inferolateral aspect of the soft palate extending inferiorly and displacing the right tonsil. Also, right facial hypesthesia was noted in the distribution of the maxillary division of the right trigeminal nerve. The remaining cranial nerves were intact and symmetrical. The findings of the rest of the head and neck examination were unremarkable, with no trismus or cervical adenopathy noted.
