Dr Shambaugh was a friend, a confidant, and teacher to many of us. He was always available for consultation, and for discussing old and new ideas.

He was known to all of us as the major otologic surgery innovator ever since he introduced the microscope to ear surgery in the United States. He made many other technological innovations. In addition to being the chairman of the department of otolaryngology at Northwestern University Medical School, he was the editor of the Archives of Otolaryngology. He made numerous scientific contributions. He was famous for his Shambaugh: Surgery of the Ear textbook. He also chaired the International Surgery of the Ear Symposium every 4 years.
