The European Consensus Development Conference on Neonatal Hearing Screening (Milan, May 15-16, 1998)

Large neonatal hearing screening programs have started in the European Union as well as in the United States and in many other countries over the last 2 to 3 years.

A number of national, European, and international projects are currently focused on the practical implementation of such programs, but many who work in clinics may not be fully aware of the results achievable in this rapidly growing area. As regional and national screening programs are launched, substantial investment of resources will be entrained. The European Project AHEAD from the Biomedicine and Health Program of the European Commission (1996-1999) is showing that there is an urgent need to evaluate effectiveness and to establish standards of best practice in the field.
