Call for Papers for the 1999 Global Theme Issue

Almost every night on television, news stories describing the latest and greatest, the newest and shiniest device, cure for cancer, surgical procedure, or weight loss drug, spill out over the airwaves. In the more sober arena of scientific publication, the findings of clinical studies of new drugs, procedures, and diagnostic tests are one of the standard staples. However, despite its potential mundaneness to those of us involved in scientific publication, the editors of 89 journals from around the world who participated in the final Delphi voting to select the theme for the 1999 Global Theme Issue chose the topic "Impact of New Technologies in Medicine." Why this topic above all the others?
